Play

Brief: In your groups, come up with a new digital app, game or piece of advertisement concept.

For the play project we we're put into groups of then and given the brief. The outcome for the play project was to get an insight into what it would be like to work with a team in industry, under a specific role and given a specific brief. After the brief was set, within our group we issued roles for each other to undertake for the brief. I was issued with the roles of joint Creative Director and Sound Engineer; my job was to over see the project and have the shared final say in the creative process, but also as Sound Engineer I had to produce any sounds that were needed for our group concept.

The first stage of the project was to come up with an idea for either a game, app or piece of advertisement. After a group discussion we chose to go with an idea that was a mobile game, that we called Ghostagraph. With a basic idea and name sorted we had to pin point the essence of the game, and the gaming mechanics. During the two week project Joe Macleod, previous Global Design Director at ustwo and founder of Include Design, came in to introduce us to what working in the industry is like, but also to help and advise us with the play project. With Ghostagraph Macleod was very helpful in terms of suggesting basic gamer mechanics, and appearance of the mobile game. After many group discussions, and experimenting with lots of different models of the game, we produced and finalised our chosen idea and concept. From this, as a group we had to present our digital idea to both the class and Joe Macleod.

Overall the play project offered me the insight into what working with a team feels like in the creative field, and also how working with a specific role and brief feels like. Macleod's advice and guidance reinforced my understanding of teamwork and industry practice, but ultimately I learned a lot about the gaming industry, the production that goes into making a game and the technical methods and process within game production. Below are two links, one a video showing my sound effects I produced, and a video I edited highlighting the process of the project.
